“THE ACROPOLIS OF STAVANGER”
MUST is now planning an expansion of the museum site in Muségt. 16 that will bring the museum to the forefront in Norway. We look into the possibilities of renewal and expansion of the buildings on our own property. We will bring together even more of our museums to create a more customer friendly and efficient museum. We wish to create a museum central point in Stavanger, in teamwork with The Museum of Archaeology.
The first developmental stage of the old museum building Stavanger museum was opened to the public in 1893.
The building was one of three monumental brick buildings that were raised on the hill south of the lake Breiavannet - all three designed by the same architect: Hartvig Sverdrup Eckhoff.
The area became known as ”The Acropolis of Stavanger". Since then the museum has been added to twice, in 1930 and 1964.
Our starting point gives us an exciting basis. The historical building already has a signal effect, and a central location with good visibility in the townscape. Public transport-facilities and parking is well developed in the vicinity. It may also become possible to cover our future needs for expansions on adjacent properties.
This development will happen in many steps where we aim to attend to universal accessibility.
The first step is to finance a competition, where we will invite selected architects to visualize the possibilities of utilizing the existing buildings, and to supplement these with exciting new buildlings.
Our goal is to start building "The New Acropolis of Stavanger" on August 1st 2015, and we aim to complete the new site to Stavanger's 1000 year anniversary in 2025!
