"Min tresko er lastet med..." // "My Wooden Shoe is Loaded With..."

Tomte-biler fra Lærdal

An exhibition about toys from Lærdal in Stavanger. The title translates roughly into "My wooden shoe is loaded with...".

In 1940, Åsmund S. Lærdal startet a publishing house, which developed into a toy factory, the Tomte Småvareindustri. His trademark was a wooden shoe, which was loaded with picture books, jigsaw puzzles, and wooden toys.

Early in the 1950s Tomte made the lifelike Anne-dolls, and the Tomte model cars were soon exported to 110 countries. In total 100 million cars were sold.

In 1978 Åsmund Lærdal discontinued the toy production, and switched to lifesaving equipment. The Anne-doll got a big sister, the Resusci-Anne lifesaving doll. Today the Lærdal Factory manufactures advanced medical first aid equipment.

img 0102

An exhibition about Lars H. Lende (1882-1971), who dedicated his life to a extensive and passionate work for children and youth. Under his parole "Alt for barna", which roughly translates into "Anything for the children", he spread happiness amongst children all over the country by taking them on pony cart rides. Lende was trained in mechanics by his stepfather, Torkel Lende, and started his own workshop where he took in youth for apprenticeships. Under the slogan "Save the youth" he provided work for unemplyed youth.

Lende always believed in the good in mankind, and was an exceptionally generous man. He led a colourful life. His wild and original ideas made the world a better place for many children and young adults. He published the newspaper "Fagamatøren".

Gottfred Borghammer (1909-2003) was Lende's helping hand. He was a writer, and before the time of the copying machine he also ran a transcription business. He has written about his childhood in several of his books. His toys and other objects from his childhood is on display in the curiousity cabinet "Memories of a childhood".

The historical drawings and wall charts are part of the collection at Stavanger School Museum (link >>).

The drawings from 2007 are made by pupils in the 5th grade at the Kvaleberg school. They have used computers and paper for their drawings. They have scanned the paper drawings and added comments to some of them, where the pupils explain the meanings they attach to their drawings.
