Use the library

Museum Stavanger’s library at Muségata 16 is a research library. The library was established in 1877 and contains about 75,000 books and journals. The library is open to public by appointment.

The library holds a specialized collection within the museum’s fields of interest, with a primary focus on:

  • Natural sciences, particularly ornithology (birds) and entomology (insects)
  • Art and cultural history
  • Local history
  • Industrial history, especially related to maritime activities, the graphic industry, and the canning industry
  • Social sciences
  • Museum studies 

A large part of the collection has been built through donations and exchange agreements with scientific institutions from around the world.
